WSL announces Air Invitational

The World Surf League (WSL) have announced the launch of the Air Invitational. The new aerial surfing contest will be held during the 2018 Quiksilver Pro France.

Australian aerialist Josh Kerr will be the event director. Josh is a former Surfing Airshow Series Champion, long-time Championship Tour (CT) and Big Wave Tour winner.

The Air Invitational will feature 18 aerial surfers, including pro athletes and free wave riders. The contest aims to celebrate innovation, technicality and creativity, and honour skate-influenced surfing.

Albee Layer, Mikey Wright, Filipe Toledo and Chippa Wilson are already in the line-up, but other competitors are still to be announced. Surfing fans will be able to pick out some of the competitors.

The WSL is planning an early preview during the 2018 Surf Ranch Pro in Lemoore, California, on 6th September. Albee Layer and Chippa Wilson will join two CT surfers in a sunset air exhibition.

"My early career and surf inspirations were all about these air events, and the guys pushing the progression of surfing. Now to be a part of bringing the air events back at the highest level of our sport, it's very special to me. I'm a huge fan of the talent right now, so I can't wait to see the guys send it in France!" – Josh Kerr, event director.
