Obituary – Chas Chidester
29 year old surfer Chas Chidester has passed away. Very sad.
Chidester learnt to surf at Seal Beach, California, USA. As a child, he competed in NSSA events and had various sponsorships. When Chas’ family moved to North Shore when he was 12, Chas’ surfing continued to improve and he competed against Mason Ho, John John Florence, Zeke Lau and Dusty Payne.
It was when Chas was in his early 20’s, that he ‘got steered the wrong way,’ according to family friend Liam McNamara who saw Chas as a ‘nephew.’ Chas struggled with drug addictions on and off for eight years, as his popularity fell and sponsors dropped him.
This past season, however, Chidester was surfing once more. “It was great to see,” said McNamara. “He was an amazing surfer.”
Since his death was announced, people have flocked to social media to express their sadness and reminisce on their memories with him.
"I love you so much brother. You will be missed beyond what you could ever imagine. Your smile, laugh, and love will never be forgotten. Rest In Peace Chas." Billy Kemper
"He just was coming back. So strong prayers to all family and friends all my condolences. Aloha." Gavin Beshen.
"He was on an absolute tear this winter. Getting all the best waves at Rockies. Scoring secret zones on the West Side." Laserwolf.
Although the cause of his death has not yet been released, but it is clear that his heart of gold and love of surfing touched many lives. He will be missed.
Rest in peace, Chas.
