Night surfing in Figueira da Foz, Portugal

The Portugese coastal city Figueria da Foz will build a floodlight system: perfect for night surfing!

During the daytime, the city is known for its beach breaks like Buarcos, Cabedelo, Molhe Norte and Murtinheira, and sees some of the longest right-hand waves in Europe.


But why should surfing have to stop at night?

From September 2019,  surfers will be able to catch waves at night aswell, thanks to an ambitious project (costing €2.6 million!) that will illuminate Cabedelo beach. The project consists of 7 floodlight towers and 21 light projectors, which will be humidity-proof and cover roughly 165 feet.

"This is a unique project, without parallel in Europe and even in the world. The municipality aims to become a water sports and beach destination with distinctive features, like its long stretch of sands in an urban context” - João Ataíde, mayor of Figueira da Foz.

The construction works start in September 2018 and will be completed 12 months later.
